Herschel and Planck were launched on the 14th May 2009. Herschel is the largest space telescope of its kind ever built probing long wave infra red radiation from some of the coldest and most distant objects in the Universe. To find out more about Herschel visit the European Space Agency site at http://sci.esa.int/science-e/www/area/index.cfm?fareaid=16 Planck ‘is designed to image the anisotropies of the Cosmic Background Radiation Field over the whole sky, with unprecedented sensitivity and angular resolution. Planck will provide a major source of information relevant to several cosmological and astrophysical issues, such as testing theories of the early universe and the origin of cosmic structure.’

Named in honour of Sir Isaac Newton XMM Newton 9X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission) is an orbiting X-ray observatory. Launched in December 1999 with an original mission lifetime of two years has been extended until at least 2010. Observations of distant galaxy groups have been used to give insights into the evolution of Dark Matter in a paper published in 2010. See http://sci.esa.int/science-e/www/object/index.cfm?fobjectid=46322 Images produced by XMM Newton can be viewed at http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_science/gallery/public/index.php

Outreach Award for the Public Promotion of Space
Astrium Ltd., recognising the importance of outreach and the encouragement/education of its future workforce, has supported many outreach initiatives and activities for more than 20 years. In 2002 Astrium took up Lord Sainsbury's challenge to establish a pool of Science and Engineering Ambassadors to go out to schools and colleges to spread the word and raise the aspiration of students, their teachers and even parents. Astrium currently relies heavily on a team of about 50 SEAs in Stevenage and 20 in Portsmouth. They work closely with the local Setpoint or Stemnet organisations and visit two or three schools or colleges each week during term time and run many visits on site. They also help out with UK Space School visits, Science and Careers fairs and supervise Engineering Education Scheme teams and Nuffield students. In all it is estimated that they 'see' more than 5000 students a year.
Education
Space Connections Space Connections is a national organisation that aims to ‘open up a galaxy of possibilities for space in education.’ We aim to boost the number of young people choosing to study and work in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We do this by bringing teacher resources together, are a central point of contact for space-related projects and develop ‘out of the box’ solutions. We have links with a wide range of organisations locally, nationally and globally including, Yorkshire Forward, Bradford College, NASA, the European Space Agency, Space City in Russia, The British National Space Centre the Royal Aeronautical Society and a whole host of other organisations.
